“Everything I learned I learned from the movies.”
― Audrey Hepburn
Every one of us loves watching movies, it is one of the best modes of pastime alongside things like reading and listening to music. However, movies have the power to completely suck us into the plot and make us feel every emotion the lead actors are experiencing, to an extent where you literally feel for and relate to the characters you are watching on the big screen. Movies have the ability to take us to different worlds and beyond, while we sit plonked in our chairs.
As we are all a part of the smarter race, we have chalked out a list of movies which have made a lasting impact on most of us and maybe for some, changed the way we think and look at things. These movies have stayed with us and in our minds much after we have left the theatre and just the thought or the idea behind the movie has nagged at our minds for days after watching it and made a lasting change on our psyche.
• 3 Idiots: starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan perfectly demonstrated the Indian education system, where everyone is judged on the basis of their test scores and peer pressure from parents rules the roost. It showed us how anybody being the slightest bit different is mocked and considered foolish. This movie made us think about our education system, and the many changes that need to be made in order to make it more efficient.
• Swades: starring Shahrukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi. Swades was a beautifully made alternative cinema movie. It told us the story of an Indian born Nasa scientist who gave it all up to settle down in a little village in India. He also used his science prowess to help the village get electricity 24 hours a day. This is the perfect example of being a part of the smarter race and using that smartness in order to benefit under privileged people.
• Taare Zameen Par: which starred Aamir Khan and Darsheel Safary told the story of a dyslexic child whose amazing artistic ability was ignored due to his poor academic record, until a teacher guides and nurtures his talent and explains his problem to his reluctant parents. This movie made most of us shed a tear and showed us how academics aren’t a basis to judge a persons talent.
• Lage Raho Munna Bhai: starring Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan and Boman Irani was a modern take on how Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of non- violence could be the perfect solution for today’s world, which is full of conflict and negativity. It showed us how by being a little more tolerant and patient our lives could be far simpler and happier.
• Rang De Basanti: which had Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Atul Kulkarni playing lead roles, beautifully narrated the transformation of a bunch of college students who, from being absolutely care free and easy going, change into being rightful citizens of the nation who cannot stand to see corruption and intolerance take place in front of their eyes. And apart from just talking about the state of our country they step up and do something about it.
This was our small compilation of movies which would stay with you, and be a part of your thoughts much after first watching it. We would love for you to send us your list, if you have one, or any other such movies which have made you think and question everything around you.
